Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) is a collaborative time-limited psychotherapy developed by Ryle. The approach aims to formulate how early experiences influence the development of unhelpful patterns that maintain a person’s current difficult experiences.
Reformulation can be seen here as a form of education with a difference – i.e. applied to the field of self-knowledge (Ryle 1994), content from the patient’s life is used to illustrate the model which allows CAT to become a real, live and relevant therapy.
